Mirella Scaramella, Commercial Director at Mobilia
Mirella Scaramella is the commercial director at Mobilia. Working on many large-scale projects over the years, she has extensive experience working on restaurants, cafes, multi residential, aged care and office fit outs, although hotels are her specialty. Mirella has most recently been responsible for procuring furnishings and decorative lighting for high-end hotels and accommodation including Crown Sydney, Smiths Beach Resort, Adnate Hotel, Parmelia Hilton and Ritz Carlton. In addition to design and commercial fit outs, Mirella is passionate about pasta, travelling, the beach and music. Ahead of the opening of Mobilia’s new flagship Melbourne showroom, Mirella shares a small neighbourhood bar she can’t resist, a design movement that inspires her and a set of drawers that will always hold a special place in her heart.
Interviews
09.01.2022Where in the world do we find you?
I am currently in sunny Perth, Western Australia.
What is your favourite room at home?
I love every room equally in my home.
Any must-read books?
Radical Candor by Australian novelist Kim Scott.
Where do you like to eat out?
I love Mummucc’ (MA-mooch!) in Wembley, Perth. It’s a small neighbourhood bar with a nostalgic Italian feel run by good people with the most delicious Italian food.
What is on your playlist?
At the moment I am listening to Belgian dance/electronic outfit Madou.
An up-and-coming designer to watch?
I really like the work of Joris Poggioli. I find he has a very unique, elegant style that plays with a contradiction of form, sculpture and materiality in an intriguing way.
Some of the design movements that inspire you?
Definitely the modern movement. The fact that this movement was a response to accelerated industrialisation and social changes in the 1920s and many of the designs from this period are still modern and revered today speaks to the everlasting beauty of this period.
Your favourite building or architect?
That is a hard one. If I had to narrow it down, it would be between Fondazione Prada in Milano, the World Trade Centre in Taipei and the Pantheon in Rome; all places I have shared beautiful experiences throughout my life and where I have been left with my breath taken away by the architecture.
A piece of furniture you own and love?
A set of drawers that was designed in 1996 by my partner Salvatore Fazzari is still my favourite piece.
An important iconic furniture piece you covet?
The Rio Coffee table originally designed in 1962 by Charlotte Perriand and now produced by Cassina.
Three designers you would take to a deserted island?
I would take Michael Anastassiades, Nipa Doshi and Jonathan Levien. All personal friends of mine, I would take Michael to help us meditate, Nipa for the great conversation and Jonnie to make sure we all survive!
What first comes to mind when you think of Australia?
Home, freedom, love and the ocean. The most blessed place to live on earth.
Can you share what you are working on at the moment?
Our Mobilia Melbourne Showroom opening. Very exciting times.
