Gerrit Thomas Rietveld

Gerrit Thomas Rietveld was a Dutch architect and furniture designer. Most famously known for his Red and Blue chair (1917) along with other works displayed around the globe. Rietveld was one of the principal members of the Dutch Artistic Movement called De Stijl.

He began working for his father as a cabinetmaker before studying architecture in Utrecht. Rietveld idealised more simplistic furniture, that could be accessed by the mass markets. His work revolutionised the way that furniture was designed and produced. First driving his rise to fame.
